The West Wing: Things Fall Apart

art's picture

Here's my analysis of the West Wing last night ("suspending disbelief"):

  • Santos made the right decision not to accept Russell's invitation to be VP. I don't think Russell could win against Vinick -- people won't trust Russell.
  • Vinick made an interesting move sucking up to Bartlet in his acceptance speech at the GOP convention. Bartlet said "he just got 5 million Democratic voters." I think he also lost about 15 million Moral Majority conservatives.
  • Vinick is a lot like Schwarzenegger -- a social liberal from California -- but without the movie star image to wallpaper over his rough spots. He would beat a conservative Democrat (Russell), but he wouldn't beat a progressive Democrat (Santos).
  • Here's the general rule of thumb for national races: when a moderate/conservative Democrat runs against a Republican, the Republican will win. When a moderate/progressive Republican runs against a progressive Democrat, the Democrat will win. People like authenticity -- they don't like it when a candidate moves to the center thinking they'll win some swing voters.
  • Bartlet should come clean on the military space shuttle, just like he did with the Cuba thing.
  • I predict Charlie will propose to Zoe on the next episode.
