Illini Loss More Than A Game

Tagged:

Luther Head's missed 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in this year's NCAA national basketball championship had me very distraught. For one, I grew up and went to high school in Illinois, thus a good majority of my friends attend the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. But beyond rooting for a sports team, the Illini loss brought an end to the remarkable streak of wins by blue states in major NCAA and professional sports.  Read More »

The War of Ideas

The Stanford Social Innovation Review just came out with a great article on why conservatives have been winning the "war of ideas." The subtitle of the article is "Why mainstream and liberal foundations and the think tanks they support are losing in the war of ideas in American politics." Key points:  Read More »

Why do progressives need to get organized?

Here is a little background on why I decided to start Progressive U, which
some consider to be a crazy undertaking.

In 1971, a few months before he was nominated by Richard Nixon as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Lewis Powell sent a memo to the Director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In the memo

Schiavo grandstanding didn't work

According to a poll conducted by ABC News and the Washington Post, 87 percent said they would not want to be kept alive if they were in Terri Schiavo's condition. As far as who should have the final say in deciding whether or not to continue life support, 65 percent said the spouse and 25 percent said the parents.

Conservative politicians thought that public opinion would break down along the same lines that people split on abortion. This is not the same as abortion, even in the minds of many conservatives.  Read More »

Polishing the tarnished image of government

This is an important project: Demos, the Council for Excellence in Government, and the Frameworks Institute are conducting a project called How to Talk about Government.

Over the last 30 years conservatives have relentlessly worked to destroy the image of government (with one important exception -- see below). They have constantly portrayed government as inefficient, ineffective, and corrupt, and over time the public has come to believe these stereotypes.  Read More »
