Affirmative Action

Affirmative action has been established in order to give equal opportunities to minority students in college admission processes. In some states people have fought against this establishment.

Why? That is exactly my question. Why would you take the initiative to fight against a cause that provides equal opportunities for all.

If we look back in history, only the caucasian (sp?) race had the priviledge of going to a good school, and a college. There were many minority students that could have accomplished so much if they were only given the chance. As African American entered the world of college, their first steps into any academic establishmen have set fires in the heart of many people; who have in turn fought to keep them away from such establishments.  Read More »

Scientists Have Officially Run Out of Things to Study

A sluggish, sick human is easy to spot. But it's harder to tell when a shrimp is under the weather. So one scientist put the little crustaceans on a tiny treadmill to examine how diseases impact their performance.

Humans fighting an infection typically sleep more and are not at top physical performance. "The situation is much more critical for a sick marine crustacean, such as a shrimp, where a decrease in performance may mean the difference between life and death," said David Scholnick, a biologist from Pacific University.  Read More »

Don't Be Afraid to Flaunt Your Ignorance!

On this website, many people are afraid to admit their ignorance. Ignorance, like narrow-mindedness, has become a negative word that continues to be thrown around pejoratively. Earlier this week one person refused to be called "ignorant," preferring a word that means pretty much the same thing but without the negative connotation: "uninformed." The truth is, being ignorant is not that bad. Admitting your ignorance is the first step to being progressive. When you realize that you're ignorant, you're only too eager to educate yourself on a certain issue. So the next time you find yourself not knowing the answer, simply say this: I don't know. See? Ignorance is progressive!  Read More »

Recently we have received several requests/complaints/inquiries regarding what might broadly be called "virtual harassment."  We take these complaints seriously.  While ProgressiveU cannot monitor every post and comment on the site, we value every member's contribution to the community.

This fall we changed the site so that only registered users can post comments.  We will continue to add new features that allow you to filter posts and comments so you can find the posts and comments that are most useful for you.    Read More »

Mentally Handicapped? Work For Kroger.

Tagged:  •

I walked into Kroger today for my weekly grocery trip and noticed the abundant amount of mentally ill and/or disabled employees. I applaud Kroger for hiring such employees and for giving them a fair shot truly representing an Equal Opportunity Employer. The labor at Kroger isn't demanding; pushing carts to their corrals, sacking groceries, and working a relatively simple machine as a cashier. However, the job is simply a routine. You can expect the same job from day to day and variation is rare.  Read More »

My First Step in Working for Progress!

I have something hopeful and succesful to report!

It finally occurred to me that all I had to do to raise awareness in my school—well, the first step to it, at any rate—was get several of my loud mouthed friends together in one room, where they’d be quiet long enough to listen to me and my ideas. Harder than it sounds? Think again!  Read More »

A Sad Day In Virginian History

It's just amazingly disgraceful how far Virginia has fallen, and this election was just an example of it. Imagine...

Virginia was the very first permanent settlement, created as a cavalier society that encouraged business and discouraged religious oppression of any kind; now businesses flee from Virginia as a mutant form of uber-Christianity is poised to consume it whole.

Virginia was the state of revolutionary and liberating men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison; now it's the state of backwards and oppressive men like Pat Robertson and Bob Marshall.  Read More »

Saddam, Death By Hanging.

Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of 148 people.  At the trial they had witnesses, including women, have recounted being tortured while in prison, farmlands were razed in retaliation and 148 Shiites were sentenced to death in connection to the shooting attack on Saddam. All 148 were killed, either dying under interrogation or executed.  Although I do think Saddam should recieve the death penalty for his crimes death by hanging seems so medieval.  Read More »
