"Life on earth" starring...man as God...again........

Recently in speech class, we watched a video of a girl performing an informative speech. While we were only supposed to pay attention to her mannerisms, rate of speech, things that would affect us, the audience, I couldn’t help but get stuck on the topic.
Cryonics.
I know – the same thought went through my head. “What?”
Cryonics, as it turned out, is the process of (for lack of a better word) “freezing” someone when they die. The idea is that if someone is 33, has a massive heart attack, and dies, that his body can be frozen (obviously with very rigid specifics) in the hopes that science will be able to unfreeze him and give him a better heart.
The unknown, of course, is when science will be able to safely “thaw” (I hate using those words as they sound so graphic, but what else fits the picture) the body. As far as we know, scientists have been able to thaw the body, but only certain parts of the body. Cells break down when they are brought to such a low temperature, and other things like some organs and the brain can’t be thawed and expected to work properly.
Now, while this may be something that we have available to us in the future, I’m not entirely sure that we know where this is going. As with anything, man has come up with an idea that, though it sounds cool and possible, probably won’t work correctly, as man is imperfect.
One of the problems I saw with this form of “burial” is this: what if man never learns how to “thaw” out these corpses? What if these lifeless, hard-as-a-rock bodies have to be left in their frozen state forever because man can’t figure out how to bring them back to life? And besides, if man is able to bring a body back to life, then how would the scientists be able to fix the body? If the man had a heart attack, how do we know that once we “thawed” out the body, scientists would be able to fix his heart?
(On a total side note, let me add that people have already “frozen” themselves in hope that scientists will be able to invent a kind of machine that will “thaw” them and heal their bodies. I wonder if the originators allow for a refund if the body is not able to be “thawed”. What if a hundred years go by, and Grandpa Joe is still “frozen” while the only people he’s related to are his great-great-great-grand children? Will they even remember him?)
This then brings up another point in cryonics. While it is possible to freeze an entire body, some people have opted to freeze only their heads. The hope with this method is that science will be advanced enough to make a body for the decapitated head that will last longer than the previous body. This body would have to be created, however, through cloning.
Cloning is something that, honestly, flips me out. Why would I want my body cloned? If Lenin were to be cloned, would we have another Russian Revolution? Or, just for kicks, we clone Lenin and raise him in another country; would the same thing happen that happened in Russia in 1917?
While these are fun psychological questions to consider (nature vs. nurture), what if this was to be taken with utmost seriousness? What if it was possible to duplicate the horrors of the Russian Revolution simply by cloning one of the visionaries? What would happen if we cloned Martin Luther King Jr.? Gandhi? Lincoln? Just as the negative events of the world could (possibly) be duplicated, would it follow that the positive events would follow?
In the end, I have no idea. I just get worried when man starts to play God and thinks he can control everything. Man has never had control over everything, and man never will have control over everything. Man has to be happy in the backseat, as life will not be tamed or put on a leash.

Thank you for this awesome post! I really enjoyed reading it. I had to laugh at the title. :) I agree with you. Science is taking way too many things way too far. It's really scary to see how little respect people are receiving in the name of "science." Often, they do not consider the eternal danger of their actions. Thanks for the well-written and informative post!

I can not tell you how much I agree. Some people don't understand the true expansion of science. The power is extensive, true, but to every positive there is a negative. I really enjoyed reading your blog. You have a satirical writing style that makes me laugh. Not to mention I now want to write about science versus man. ;)

um...thanks. I think...:)

I think it's wonderful. Man has a long ways to go to reach his true potential. There's this saying that the only difference between genius and insanity is that genius has its limits. Cloning would open so many possibilites for us. Actually i forgot where i read it but i think it was in 2006 a scientist became the first human cyborg when he connected a computer to his brain. I don't know about you but I think being a cyborg would be sweet.
