Living Wage

Jim Sinegal, CEO of Costco, the nation's largest wholesale club operator, has signed the statement in support of raising the minimum wage. Sinegal said, "The increase in the minimum wage is long overdue. I hope Congress and the president will move swiftly to enact sensible legislation that will demonstrate our nation's commitment to reward hard work."

A truly sad fact is that minimum wage doesn't cover living expenses where I live. You have to be making at least $13/hr. It's almost impossible to save money. I wonder what is really happening to this country.

When raising the minimum wage was being debated in MN, the detractors insisted that minimum wage workers are usually high school students who don't need a living wage, because they're just working for gas money while living off their parents. I know three adults in my building alone who are raising children on minimum wage, and it is impossible. They always end up back on welfare, because they just can't make ends meet. Then, when they're back on their feet after a few months of welfare, they'll go try it again at minimum wage, and it is never enough. It's not just teenagers who work for minimum wage, and even if it were 100% teenagers, with the cost of college, they need a living wage, too.

I've got some pretty good statistics about Living Wage in my blog entry. It is close to impossible as you said. Often it is mother's that are trying to raise kids that are on this scale also. About a quarter of the workforce between 18-64 are minimum wage workers.

Wages have definitely not kept up with inflation, and also the cost of fuel is making it hard for people that earn even above the minimum wage too.

It's just getting harder and harder for people to survive. How does the government plan on staying stable much longer?

Anywho...when would a minimal wage be raised anyway?

I would like to see a graph or paper comparing rises in gas prices with rises in minimum wage. I'm sure the lines wouldn't overlap very much.
