One God or many?

Do religious fanatics discredit all religins but their own? Are Christians 'not supposed' to believe the gods of other religions, such as Allah, exist? I feel they are all one god, called by different names. They are essentially nicknames for the same god, in my opinion.
Each religion has a god, and they each share characteristics. Healing powers, knowledge, boundless compassion. Is it so hard to believe then that they are all the same being and entity, just adapted for each society? It is undeniable that this is a possibility. Society is a strong power that has affected many aspects of history.
The variations within each religion can be accounted for by accepting that time changes everything. Human nature has also had a hand in this, as seen in the creation of the Protestant faith. Some individuals feel one should be strict in their following of their religion, and others do not. Different aspects of the religion are emphasized and a new religion or denomination is born.
Considering that relgion has started more than a few wars in the past, I see religious tolerance as a big step toward world peace. However, refusal to acknowledge a god by any other name will put a halt to this.
I apologize if any of my facts are wrong, and please feel free to correct me. I am just very interested to know how others feel about this.
