Scary Times in Asia

This morning I heard about the big 7.9 magnitude quake that just slammed central China killing at least 10,000 people. Scary. I truly hope the victims of the hard-hit areas get the aid they need in this difficult time. It will be interesting to see what sorts of repercussions this could have for the impending summer Olympics. If people are afraid to come to China due to a number of reasons, now adding earthquakes to the list, I wonder if the Olympic fan turnout will suffer.

This earthquake came less than a week after another quake shook up Tokyo. 10 days ago another earthquake hit Indonesia. There have already been two typhoons (“typhoon season” doesn’t start until July) in the West Pacific, which have created some extreme wind on my island the past week. The volcanoes on my island (and in several other places around Asia) are going nuts. The earth is freaking out, and it’s causing some people to freak out, too.

What’s happening? Some people may go as far as saying, “it’s the beginning of the end of the world,” or “they are signs of the end times!” Others may say the earth is simply trying to keep itself in balance.

I say I don’t know what’s going on. I only hope I can make it through my years in Japan without being buried alive or crushed in a quake, roasted by a volcano, or drowned by a typhoon or tsunami.
