Yeah, I had Mono. No, I Didn't Kiss Anyone

In high school, I was one of the unfortunate people to get mono, otherwise known as mononucleosis. Otherwise known as "The Kissing Virus". When I got it, I got nothing but grief from friends and acquaintances. I was under the assumption that mono was a bad thing--which it is! In addition to feeling sick, your liver(I think it's the liver...) can actually get inflamed and any hard hits to the stomach could cause serious problems. I was told all this and I realized this was no laughing matter. However, I was not aware of mono's interesting history. Like the fact that most people get it from direct, personal contact with other people. Kissing for one. So I told my friends I had mono, and what was the reaction I got? Laughter and "Who'd you kiss?!" I began to get really annoyed after the second or third accusation. I mean, isn't this serious? I can't go to gym class because my liver might 'splode, and all of you laugh at me? But wrongful assumptions are so common, especially in high school. You can't say you're on birth control without someone thinking you're "active". As a guy, you can't like pink or dance because that would be gay. Girls are supposed to be girly and keep up with the latest styles...and the latest boyfriends. Our society is insane and that's where it's driving me. I know I've said it before, but it's worth mentioning again. A high school English teacher once wrote the word "ASSUME" on the blackboard. He said when you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME. Wise words, I say.
