I never planned on doing a continuation blog of my first one, Elderly Abuse, but here I am. I find myself in a very complex situation. I love my grandfather very much and I cannot decide what is better for him. He has Parkinsons disease, he needs help I know. He has been forgetting things lately and mixing up holidays. For the first time last week he forgot his S.S. number. My family decided to go along with his choice not to be moved to assisted living in his retirement home, instead we hired a "Helping Angel". She seemed nice enough to my mom. Then I went to drop of some paper work to her while I was home over break and she was not there, and she was supposed to be. She has been getting there late and leaving early. She talks on her cell phone rather than to my grandpa. She used her time there to do HER laundry. I feel that this is elderly abuse. Neglect.
I never thought I would be in this situation, and I had just written a blog about it. I really think we all need to take care of our elders. It is our job, they are the ones that got us here, that made us happen. Without the elderly of this country we would not have more than half the things we have today in our society. I believe that other cultures understand the respect that is needed for elders. Asian culture always takes care of their elders, including Indians. They have the grandparents live with them, they bring them everywhere, and they care for them without sticking them in an unfamiliar care settings.
Why is it that in America we cannot seem to gather respect for our seniors? We should all really begin to take them into our daily considerations.
