Males Are Not Important

In mid-2006 a Mormon fundamentalist leader named Warren Jeffs was placed on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Top Ten Most Wanted List as well as the Fox television show America's Most Wanted. Jeffs made it onto the infamous list for child molestation as well as other charges and the facts unveiled about him and the community he was running would make the coldest heart skip a beat. Today, corporate news outlets are circulating an Associated Press article about hundreds of women and children being taken from Warren Jeff's ranch. Like most other resources on Jeffs, this article excludes a key component of his criminal activity: his treatment of males. Jeff's did, condoned and even insisted upon a multitude of immoral things, including that which the content of the articles discusses. But his polygamy practice was only able to succeed because of how he dealt with young males in his community. If the male to female ratio was even near equal, the practice of having many wives simply wouldn't work. In turn, Jeffs mandated that fathers drive their male children far away from home when they reached a certain age and then simply leave them abandoned in the middle of the road. The kids were not eighteen year olds whom one could argue could fend for themselves. Warren Jeffs is serving a ten year prison sentence for serving as an accomplice to rape. He essentially ran a rape farm, he ruined the lives of dozens of children—including the males he forced to start new lives with nothing in the middle of nowhere, and he preached bitter hatred. There are taped classroom lectures conducted by Jeffs in which he denounces the music of The Beatles, stating that it is the works of the black man. There are many problems with today's article as well as the sentence that Jeffs is serving. The article connects him to one crime, a serious one of course but only one of many. He should be denounced as an individual for everything that he did wrong, as a leader no less. The sentence is another issue entirely. I think it is fair to say that Jeffs initiated rape activity, he was not a mere accomplice. Even if he were simply an accomplice, ten years is a rather short sentence for a man who aided in forcing sex upon little children. Isn't it interesting that possessing five grams of crack cocaine generates a mandatory minimum sentence that is half the length of Jeffs'? One can say with confidence that assisting in rape deserves far more than twice the prison sentence for possessing five grams of crack. I believe that the prison system has failed us and that it should be for reformative and rehabilitative purposes but that is for a different time. So long as prisons in the United States are used for punitive purposes, we need to make sure that the punishment reflects the crime. In contrasting ways, both Jeffs and crack cocaine possessors face sentences that do not reflect their crimes. And while the crimes committed against males weren't a quarter as bad as those committed against females, they were still horrible. Males are not omnipotent nor are they omniscient and the media needs to stop treating them as such. This is not because males are overrated in the media, they are underrated. Voiceless males need a voice too.
