The Republican cantidates for President must have failed history class, or something. I found the following quotes online at godlessgeeks.com, an atheist website. As an atheist, I'm scared, and I hope you are, too, after you read them.
Senator John McCain: "the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation."
Governor Mike Huckabee: "I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that’s what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards."
[Mitt Romney also said something rather similar to this in one of his speeches a few months back.]
Um, was John McCain paying attention during his education? I know he never went to law school and therefore never passed the bar, but what's his excuse for not knowing the Constitution after more than 25 years in Congress? He says that the Constitution established the USA as a "Christian nation," and yet the US Constitution does not mention the word "God" even once. It doesn't mention Christianity or Jesus. Actually, the only reference in the Constitution to religion of ANY sort is in a small article which states that no religious test shall be administered to one seeking public office. Don't believe me? Go read the Constitution.
As for Huckabee and Romney, that is an absolutely terrifying thought. Change the US Constitution after 220 years so that it can become more backwards than ever before? Changing the Constitution to agree with the Christian "God" isn't going to do anything except make the more fervent Christians happy and aggravate the rest of us who still believe in a separation of church and state in this country. Turning the US of A into a Christian theocracy is preposterous, and so is changing any laws at all just so that they agree with the Christian god's principles. No religion rules this nation, thankfully, because we don't have a national religion. It's true that a lot of Americans happen to be Christians, but that doesn't mean that everyone is. Everyone in the USA can worship whom they please, but our nation's laws shouldn't favor any religion or god. Do you know why? Because our CONSTITUTION states that the government cannot endorse any one religion or its views!
