Tobacco, like any other drug, has harmful side affects and can even result in death. Not only does it hurt the user but when smoking the smoker can hurt others due to second hand smoke. If this drug and its various forms are so harmful and addictive then why isn't it already illegal?
Many states and restaurants have already started to try to control the issue. Some states have a law that says people can only smoke outdoors and many restaurants have special seating areas for smokers. While this does help it doesn't eliminate the problem completely.
The problem is that if we made the use of tobacco illegal it would only create a black market for it that tobacco users would go to. It may not even stop the problem it may just make it worse due to the severity of the consequenses.
What the government needs to do is find a way to keep tobacco users from hurting non tobacco users through second hand smoke (kind of like what some of the states are doing). But making tobacco fully illegal may be a good idea to many of us but it may be impossible to enact. This issue needs to be solved but it is difficult because of the many issues atatched to it.
