I don't think there is such a thing as a selfless act. I really don't. I think that everything you do has some benefit to you, otherwise there really is not point in doing it. You like the feeling of helping others. You want to make sure that the world will be safe for your future generations. etc.
I don't disagree that organizations are grateful, but still I think that if they didn't have volunteers, that it could still somehow get done.
About not being forced to do it. I was required to get 150 hours so as to get full IB diploma so as to get 24 credit hours. That's why I did it. And I do the one's for NHS and Beta because I want to have the stolls and cords at graduation and there are only 60 hours between the two of those; so, that's not as bad. Oh and of course there was the wanting to look impressive.
I didn't say that I didn't care about the world around me. I do. I just don't think that some of the things that I "volunteer" for really amount to helping the world around me. Also, you don't have to volunteer to affect the world around you.
