Dreaming of Hope

It's dark outside and as you sleep, you feel the cool, damp air wash over you. Just like every other night as you lie in the doorway trying to sleep, your stomach starts to grumble. It's then that you realize you haven't eaten in four days. You look next to you to make sure your little sister is alive. After your parents died on the streets by stray bullets in a gang war, you and her had no where to turn for protection and support. You tried stealing food, but with your sister along you always got caught, but you can't leave a two-year old alone in the big city. There's tons of monsters and predators in the grotesque woeld we live in. The government is no help to us, they pretend we don't exist. I know I exist and I know if I'm going to keep me and my little sister alive I am going to have to find a couple and sucker them into taking us in. Even if they just feed us for a while. We can always run if they start roughin' us and loot the place, then sell what we can and barter for scraps. As you finally drift off to sleep, your mind starts to dream. It's Christmas Eve and your sister is fast asleep in the room across the hall. Downstairs you hear your parents, not those people who abandoned you, but the ones who took you in off the street and gave you love, a home, and an education. As you lie in the doorway and sleep, the cold creeps in and slowly you drift off to nothing.
