I was planning to write this blog entry later but I've decided to type this up now.
I've seen several comedians perform at my college and a thought occured to me while watching the first show: What if there could be a progressive comedian? I mean think about it! Not only could a show be entertaining and funny, but it could also benefit society.
Maybe I'm just the ignorant freshman who knows very little about what's out there. There could already be (and I hope there are) progressive comedians. These people could tell jokes while relating the audience to current issues and world-wide problems. I've been thinking about how people can achieve progress lately, and I think this may be one great medium for it. Being preachy about global warming is one thing, but making people actually enjoy hearing what you say is something completely different.
What else could a progressive comedian do? Well, this comedian could do just about anything, like any of us do on this site. He or she could bring up how we can improve the economy or help the poor children in Africa...all while making us laugh. You may think there's a downside to this--that the comedian couldn't possibly bright to light serious issues and make his audience think deeply about such subjects. You may think the audience would have trouble separating comedy from fact. You wouldn't have to worry about such things if the comedian is skilled enough to indicate the difference...and make the audience giggle in the process.
I had to get this blog entry out of the way when I saw Jared Munson's blog entry about "Things That Don't Make Sense". He mentioned he was a comedian. A comedian on ProgressiveU....maybe my idea isn't so far-fetched after all.
(P.S. I hope you don't mind being used as an example, Jared! I can always edit later if you want)
