A few short films...

I always get very inspired by what filmmakers can do in a short time. It's amazing when they can get a message out in a few short minutes. A few of my favorites are:

Sophie Muller's music video for Sarah McLachlan's "World on Fire." The video cost only $15 to make and shows what all of the money that goes into making a typical music video can do in an impoverished area. The video can be seen here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=hzoNInZ2ClQ
I know most wouldn't consider this a short film, but the "Meter Fairy" stunt on Jackass is an amazing piece of art as far as I'm concerned. It perfectly demonstrates why people feel the need to rebel against authority; because sometimes authority begins to feel far too arbitrary. Here's the clip: http://youtube.com/watch?v=i8iF9F-S0p0
Finally, Spike Jonze's music video for Fatboy Slim's "Priase You." This video takes place in the middle of a public street and portrays unglamorous and unattractive people performing a poorly choreographed dance. The video was so refreshing that it was nominated for multiple MTV awards. It was a great rebellion against all things insincere, objectifying and materialistic. My point is just that sometimes great art and great messages appear in outlets that are easy to dismiss. Being cultured isn't all about snobbery, it's about sincerity. Finding something with a sincere message isn't always easy in a world that's anxious to to use our hearts to get to our wallets, but it's worth seeking out.
