My Hero Part I: New Land

My mother is my hero. She came to America from Guatemala in December of the year 1985. While crossing the border and making that journey from her birthplace to new land she carried a new life in her. My sister, Monica*, was conceived in Guatemala but she was born in America.

My mother had gone to the Mexican jail for a couple of days because they found her and other women trying to cross the border. Even though my mom was held up for a while she still withstood the obstacles in her path. She had to pass through woods and rivers in the night trying to make it to the new land. When she finally arrived to California she met up with a friend in Downtown, Los Angeles.

My mom was going to stay with this friend for a while until she got situated. The problem was that the guy didn’t have any more space where he was living. My mom slept there the first night but afterwards she had to find another place. My mother’s friend found a place where she could live for a time. My mother’s friend had helped so much that he even lent my mother money for her to come to America.

My mother soon found a job in a factory sewing clothes. She gave birth to my sister, and she soon saved up money to pay off the guy friend. He even told her that she was a good woman because she was the only one to actually pay him back. When she had the money she brought my brother and sister and their father to America
