Fafsa

I filled out the FAFSA the other day and it made me really depressed because as I was filling it out it constantly reminded me that I am probably not getting any money. I wish there was a box to check saying hey look at me my parents are not paying for my college they may make a few bucks but are not sharing!!! I am just so frustraited and I wanted to know if I was not the only one in my boat, which I know I am not. How are you all getting through it???

i know that my parents cant pay for college- I made the choice to want a community college education because its the only one that wont drain my parents pockets if they decide to help a little bit. Probably for a lot of students the majority if not all their education will be paid for my scholarships and grants.

ha i know what you're going through. my parents filed fafsa and i got no money! my dad worked too much last year and made more money then he usually does, so it looked liked we had money. i have barely any scholarships or grants from colleges. i'm planning to take out a loan for the cheapest college on my list.

I got a bunch of money last year as a dependent, using my mom's information. This year, as an independent, I received way less money, even though I make less and have virtually no assets. It sucks, and it's very frustrating...

Well technically there is a box where you say "hey my parents aren't paying for my education". There's a part on the form where you guestimate the contribution your parental units are making. If you put a low number, that'll be factored in.

Mind Control is Easier Than You Think

The same exact thing is happening to me! Why does it matter that my mom makes money when she is not going to help me with college! And with this fafsa it makes it impossible to get other scholarships that depend on that! It is so frustrating because I have been working on scholarships like crazy! I am also going a community college first, but eventually I will have to go to a four year school! I wish college was not so expensive because it is definitely not fair for people like us!!!

I was there before. I had to petition the FAFSA thing to be counted as independent, even though I had filed my own taxes and been on my own for three years. I had to show them rent reciepts and everything. I think that if they won't honor your independent claim, the parents should be required to contribute the stated amount.
