PROM MADNESS!

Does anyone know how the whole idea of prom ever began? If you do, do you know if they ever intended prom to get this much hype? I'm not saying that anything is wrong the excitement of prom. I'm excited for my senior prom that is coming up in a couple of proms. But think about it, prom is just like any other dance.
My problem with prom is all of the stress and time that gets put into it. There is a constant search for not just a date, but for the "perfect" date. Also, not for a dress, but for the "perfect" dress. Money is spent on tickets, hair, shoes, makeup, the dress,... and don't forget the limo. Is all of this honestly that worth it?
I think that students should have a special moment such as this one to celebrate and remember forever, but should it honestly cost this much. Should more time be dedicated to it than the time spent at the dance itself?
My friend and I are currently planning a drive at our school to collect old dresses to give away to teenage girls who were thinking about not going to the prom simply because they couldn't afford a dress. People, I am not saying that prom iteself is bad, I'm simply saying that it seems to have become very very materialistic. And go without a date if you don't have one!!! Who cares!!! When you are older you might regret not going simply because you didn't have a date. I know many people who wished they had just went with their friends.
Please tell me what you think! I am anxious do know others opinions on this topic!
