Every morning before I leave the house for Anatomy class, I always check the news and the weather. This morning I was surprised to see news about Cuba. I have wondered what Cuba was up to lately because the last time I heard anything about the country was when Castro temporarily relinquished power to his brother Raul due to ill health. The first few weeks following his announcement CNN featured stories with a few blurbs about Castro having utmost confidence in his brothers abilities, the continuance of the current political system, etc. etc.
What I find intersting about this latest story is its timing. It is my understanding that the country's official newspaper 'Granma' first broke his official resignation as president around 3 A.M. All of the previous stories have been issued mid-day or in the morning. We all know that Castro has been in power for 50 years, and he was in his early thirties when he first launched the revolution leading to his presidency. Discarding his problematic colon and general ill health, I'm surprised he has lived as long as he has.
The timing of this story makes one assume that something major has happened regarding Fidel Castro. The fact that the story doesn't contain any pictures thus far but only statements from his letter, raises my suspicions. It's sort of like how everyone wonders if Osama is still alive, and the CIA analyzes every video that is subsequently released from al-Queda to see if it is newer or older, and if it really is public enemy number 1. I wonder if the unusual timing is due to the fact that Castro has died. It makes sense that the Cubans would release a resignation letter first to ensure a smooth transition of power from Castro to his brother pending their version of a 'democratic' election.
I guess only time will tell. Anyone else care to wager their opinion? That is all for now.
