If you read up on current events and issues, you will reap the benefits socially, intellectually, and sexually (hey... anything is possible if you read the news). Honestly, what's better than impressing everyone you know with your cornucopia of knowledge? And seriously boys, the ladies love informed (and mildly attractive) guys. That having been said, here are the places where I get my news fix:
1. The New York Times "Today's Headlines" Daily E-mail
Every morning, once I successfully will myself out of bed, stumble gracefully over my roommate's shoes, and prepare to face the day (rough times...), I check my e-mail and find that my "Today's Headlines" has been waiting patiently to be opened, waiting to reveal the pressing matters the new day brings. Just go to nytimes.com and set up an account (it's free), then pick what sections of the Times you want headlines from, and BAM! You're already a more impressive and probably sexier member of society. And the article summaries are sympathetic to the non-morning people like myself. I like my news light and simple in the morning (sort of like my coffee).
Side note: If you have a Blackberry, a) you're a lucky bitch, and b) there's a New York Times app that I've heard is awesome.
2. Votegopher.com
VoteGopher is extremely easy to use and has very comprehensive Election 2008 coverage. This site digs up each candidate's policies and opinions on almost any issue, and organizes all the information so you can easily compare the candidates. So when someone asks you, "What does Hillary think about the regulation of subprime lending?", you will know the correct answer (she likes it).
3. Popular Science
Whether you prefer the magazine or the website (popsci.com), Popular Science has oodles of noodles of cool articles about science and technology. This is where I find out about awesome new gadgets and technological research. And just to lay down the law, I'M A GIRL. I LIKE SHOES. I SPEND TIME ON MY HAIR AND MAKEUP. But even I can appreciate the awesomeness of Popular Science. It may even be my favorite magazine (after Cosmopolitan, of course).
4. Podcasts
I'm in an Anderson Cooper 360 phase, but there are so many excellent news podcasts out there to choose from. I watch my podcasts when I'm working out (so I can break a mental sweat too) or when I'm screwing around on Facebook, I play one in the background. Most of them are about 15 minutes long and you don't even have to read!! How appealing is that?!
5. Subscribe to Blogs
People who blog about current events usually know what they're talking about. It's hard to have an opinion about something you know nothing about, so it's fair to say that most bloggers are reading the news. This source isn't as trustworthy, but it's very available and very popular. A lot of people have interesting things to say and deserve to be heard.
Those are just a sampling of the places where I get my doses of news-y goodness. Let me know if you get your news from a different fabulous source. Sharing is caring.
Respectfully,
The Little Critic
