Keeping Up With Social Networks – the MySpace Era

Who doesn’t have a MySpace [1] account? These days it seems insane not to have a MySpace [2] profile, almost everyone I meet has one. Family, friends, coworkers, even those people technologically challenged have MySpace [3] accounts. The sad thing about MySpace [4] is that it is the worst written social network; it is so unorganized and cluttered but so popular you have to jump in and join the mess.

Honestly, I like Multiply [5] better. Of course others will say Friendster [6] is a good one too. Well how about Facebook? You can integrate so much into Facebook [7] it gets confusing, and what in the world is up with the “gifts”? Now why would I want to pay $1.00 for a little icon to put on someone’s wall?

Recently I came across Ning [8], you can create your very own social network. Yeah, what do you know I joined a few networks and created one just for the fun of it.   Oh and now there’s a bunch of social networks for pets too! Yup, my dogs have a few accounts. WorldWideFido [9], Dogster [10], and so many more.

Do we have nothing better to do? How do we keep up with school, work, and social networking? What compels us to join networks, post blogs, share photos and videos? What do our pets have to socialize about on their social networks?
