I recently began school in New York City, one of the greatest cities in the world. That is how I choose to see the city; I know it's flaws, but it is trying very hard to "clean up its act."
Unfortunately, the city is still seen as one of those melting pots of iniquity. An all girls' school which is affiliated with the college which I attend sees fit to have several security meetings during orientation. During these security meetings, the girls are presented with "Rape Whistles." The whistles, standard shiny whistles attached to a cord to be hung around the neck, are designe to protect the girls from unwanted sexual advances. They were "educated" on the proper use of the whistle in said meetings.
Isn't it simply sad that we live in a society where something so ludicrous as a "Rape Whistle" is deemed necessary? Isn't it sad that such a glorious community, a place of learning and culture, must still be tarred by a reputation of lawlessness?
