We at ProU are constantly trying to make the site better and easier to use, but we can't do that without your help and input. Please leave comments here about what you would change and how.

I would like to see the site have more blogs that arent merely articles from the NY Times, Yahoo News, etc copied and pasted into a blog with only a sentence at the bottom that is a summary or has minimal analysis of the issues at hand or as simply a question to whoever bothers to read the article that has been copied and pasted.
It seems like I see way too many blogs that look like that. I think it should be your original words that are counted not say a copied and pasted NY Times article with one sentence of yours at the bottom.
I like the idea of featured bloggers as it encourages better blogging.
Blogs should be able to be searched by category or topic. If you want to read about Abortions there is an abortion link that shows all the recent blogs about that subject.

Although there is little we can do to prevent a person from posting a blog like that, when it comes to the final point tally, we take this into account and discard blogs with minimal commentary.

I'd like to see ProgU revert back to highlighting new comments like they used to, it just makes it far easier to scan down through large volumes of replies and identify where new comments are.

I agree. I'd like to see some sort of visual notification about Blogs/Threads that have new comments. My email in-box is flooded with mail because that is the only way I can tell if a blog I have posted on has new information. Another option I would like is daily digest emails. Instead of getting an email for every new comment posted, just one email per day with a list of updates.
Submitted by TUFFGONG on Fri, 07/20/2007 - 9:52am.
If you use the track feature on your profile it will show you blogs you posted on with new comments. What I was referring to was the way these new comments were clearly highlighted on the blog itself before ProgU went through it's redesign.
When you return to a blog to see new comments, it get's tricky identifying where they all are when there is a mass of new comments blending in with old ones.

Well, I'm one of those guilty five:) I'd like to see all of the above, but I would really, really, really, really, etc like to get the sidebars all dolled up. They drive me insane as they are; most especially the Blogging For Progress area.

These are great, but they don't exactly match the few changes I'd like to see.
The sidebars make it a little cluttered. I don't use half the links over there (and I liked it better when the main part was in the middle...). Granted, ProgU is much cleaner than many blogging sites out there, but those sites are inferior ones with only a fraction of ProgU's professionalism. Apple, Google--please design our website.
More money for bloggers. all the mental effort they put into writing this stuff is honestly probably worth more than $1000.
And as Tugggong mentioned, making it easier to find new comments would be great.
one-click rating.
Also, when you look at a user's 'track' page, the red asterisk or whatever should appear next to topics in which that user has commented since the last time you looked at that topic, on any page.
Make all the buddies and 'buddies of' visible in profiles, not just the most recent six or a random six or whatever it is now.
why is 'invective' forbidden under the terms of agreement? lots of famous and moving speeches and texts are filled with invective, adynaton, accumulatio, etc. writers who occasionally thunder or PC pantywaists?
Submitted by embryowassup on Thu, 07/19/2007 - 9:51am.
I do agree with the sidebar thing. When I came back to the site, I thought that there was some sort of glitch. I do believe that alot of the stuff on the sidebars could be moved around to make the more relevent or more used stuff toward the top of the page, and the other stuff to the bottom. Care to comment about which things you don't use?
Given that we're a non-profit, the money issue is a difficult one to work on. We'd need to do a lot more outreach.
I believe that the red asterisk indicates an update on the blog entry itself (either a revision or promotion to the front page).
The thing about the buddy lists is some people (like me) have a bunch of buddies and buddies of, and to list all of that in the profile would require so much more bandwidth.
There are some bloggers on the site who exemplify exactly why we prohibit invective writing. The idea is to be progressive, not demeaning or derogatory.
Also, I think it's pantywastes (that is, a mess in one's panties).

I just thought I'd jump in, because on the sidebar issue, if they were more graphic-based it would be easier to slip banner ads in without them being as obnoxious as the one at the bottom of the page. You could set up a donation-based hierarchy for the size and frequency of the ads and maybe offer tax exemption as well.
Submitted by embryowassup on Thu, 07/19/2007 - 10:16am.
That I'd have to consult Art about, considering that he's the one who has all that info. As far as I'm aware, we're a non-profit, which means that we don't really accept ad space (I have no idea how things work out with that JSA scholarship, but I don't think that it's lining our pockets). The tax exemption thing might be a good idea, but we'd have to research how to go about doing that.
Personally, I like the fact that this site doesn't have any banner ads.
Invective was put into the ToS because some of our users were having a fit after being warned that name-calling was against the ToS. They couldn't seem to associate name-calling with abusive; so invective was added since they needed it spelled out more plainly than harassing or abusive.

I love this website, but it's way too text-based. I actually feel uncomfortable when I look at the main page because it's all text and no user-friendly graphics/buttons, etc.
I'd rather save my reading energy for someone's blog than expend it all on trying to find my way to it.
Even just a drop-down horizontal menu bar across the top of the page (underneath the logo) would be awesome as a start.

there is so many subjects on the side of the screen. perhaps if there was just a link to those featured titles itd be easier on the eyes. it seems so overwhelming to look at a screen and not know where to look.
maybe even smaller comment boxes with smaller font. i love the format of the site. but it leaves me buggy-eyed. =P

Could you elaborate? Too many different things? Too many lists? If you had to remove something from the side bars, what would you remove, or what would you keep? Would you rather have the bulk of the site (blogs and comments) in the center and one bar on each side?
Just trying to get a feel for what you would change.
Submitted by embryowassup on Tue, 07/24/2007 - 12:42pm.
When discussion mounts up, the comment boxes get smaller and smaller. And, while I do like the nested comments and want to keep them, perhaps there's a way that once the comments get to a certain level, there would be a link opening a separate page of comments, so we can still read left to right rather than top to bottom.
Also, perhaps we could include a link that would display the parent of a comment, since it's difficult to guage which replies go to which comments sometimes without a ruler in hand.
The first idea comes from LiveJournal, the second from deviantART.

I wouldn't care about banner ads if the scholarship was $10,000 instead of $1,000. These days, I've accepted that banner ads are a way of life.
It seems like you'd be able to accept ad space as long as all the money went back out somewhere instead of into salaries, etc. It's a thought.
