What's your news IQ? (new bonus point opportunity)

If you blog in this site you probably pay more attention to the news than most people. But how much of it do you remember? Do you pay attention to the details? Do you remember the sports scores, but doze off when you get to the news about Washington? We have some new resources for you, and also an opportunity to earn some more bonus points.

First, you may have noticed the new News link in the menu items at the top of the site. This page lists headlines from news articles that ProU editors decided to share with members. We will be expanding this feature in the future, but please check it out and provide the editors with your feedback.

For this month's bonus opportunity, we want to encourage you to take the Pew Research Center's News IQ Quiz. We'll give you 100 bonus points just for taking the quiz and reporting your results, and 500 additional points if you score above 70th percentile. Report your results on this form by June 30 to qualify for the bonus points. Some of the questions are a little bit tricky, but don't get flustered, and don't cheat (you're on the honor system for this one).

If you find the quiz results interesting, you may want to check out other resources on the Pew Research Center web site. The Pew Research Center bills itself as a "fact tank," providing "information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world." You can sign up for their email alerts on topics that you are interested in, and before you know it your friends will be calling you a news genius (if they don't already).

You know, I don't consider myself especially news-savvy, so it's kind of sad that I did alright. I missed the minimum wage question because I thought only the House passed it.

And what's up with fewer women knowing about the news than men?

LOL, I thought for sure that I was going to fail since I tend to only pay attention the news that interests me and ignore most every thing else...

Not sure about the fewer women knowing about the news than men.

I'm not in the contest, but took the quiz anyway.

"You correctly answered 9 of the 9 possible questions along with approximately..."

Kind of scary!

Better off than most women across the country!

I wonder why women pay less attention to the news than men? The only thing I can come up with, and it will probably be contested, is that so many women are busy they don't get to watch as much news?

If someone studied (and I'm way too lazy for this) the trend of men and women keeping up with the news, I'm sure one could see whether women mapped the same 20 years ago, and whether that correllates to any other trends that might affect how much time women have to read the news.

Like, for example, women work a lot more than they used to, which may contribute to them being busy. But they also take public transportation more often in urban centers, which gives opportunities to read the paper (but then, what cross-section of the female population is represented by those in urban areas with public transportation). Many work with computers, which, with Internet access, allows them to read news on breaks.

I have no idea if any of this is statistically supported, but it would be interesting to compare the trends of female daily lives in America and see whether women realistically have time, and if so, whether they just aren't paying attention because they aren't interested? What would interest them more? Different media? Different news?

Me too! Did you miss the minimum wage question?

Maybe they should have asked more questions...

Actually...yeah I did! I though I wouuld get that one. I was surprised how low everyone else scored though.

No kidding. Did you check the demographic view, too? The education part made sense, but the age and gender part seemed strange.

Yeah, either they should have had more questions or we should start getting very afraid by the lack of what people know....or dont know

I got 60th percentile (6 out of 9 correct). Based on the comparison chart that's better then most in my demographic group, but it's not great.

Isn't it weird that there's a 17-point difference in percentile range with only one more question difference?

reboloke's picture
Volunteer for the Progressive U Alumni Association

Yeah, that is a little weird. I think it would be better if they had more questions, so the percentages didn't skew so much for each wrong answer.

Seems to me that the users here could come up with a better test.

Now there's an idea for you, Reboloke, making up a Progressive U IQ Test :)

There's an idea. I'm not sure how to implement a ProU IQ test, but I'll have to think on that. Can you explain more what you have in mind?

Did you forget you were going to send me a message on this? My biggest question for you is are you thinking a ProU quiz on mainstream media stories, ProU content, ProU's front page only, our newsfeeds, or a combination of these things?

No, I didn't forget, I have been so swamped and I am so sorry! I will send in something tonight to you.

Forgive me!?

This chart and the charts by gender, education, and age show your percentile rank. The percentile rank shows the percentage of the public who scored below you on the quiz. By definition, the average person scored at the 50th percentile (half of the public did worse, half did better). You scored better than 77% of the general public on the quiz.

"The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall."

Wow! I did really well! I scored a 77%! I'm above the national average, above the men's average and the women's average, college grads' average, above 18-60+ age averages, and by news consumers and non-news consumers! I watch the six o'clock pm news and the News with Katie Couric at 6:30pm. Wow! That really made my day! :))

I only missed one question--and it was because I am slightly dyslexic. I'm still in the 91% percentile. Hooray!

But seriously...basing all that off of a 9 question quiz is...well, there should have been more questions. At least 20.

I missed the minimum wage question so that automatically counted that I missed two questions b/c there was a follow-up question if that question was answered right. but I got every other question right. i was mostly guessing on those questions too...lol

9/9 correct, 96th percentile... woo?

That just means I watch way too much news, y'all. I guess that half hour every morning of CNN, and catching Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert every afternoon, is paying off O.o

6 out of 9. not bad. I'm only 17, so i had to put the 18 to 35 demographic but i did better than that demographic. I'm pleased with the results. Although I would have liked to get 70%

I had to do that too. I'm 17 as well.

I got 8 atta 9!!!! I feel special.. I cant believe peopel in my age group are at 39 percent.... I feel bad man

Its not my job to kill you....

I too scored 8/9, placing me in the 91% ranking.

8/9 as well, you know it is pretty bad when canadians know more about what is happening in the united states then there own country for heaven sakes and collage/university students to bid, you know they should just hire collage/university students from this site to run the country. maybe things would not be going down hill as fast for the U.S as they are right now, like for example the canadian dollar hit 95 on friday, all time high. maybe its just me though, because bush doesnt seem to mind much.

amolms's picture

8/9 so I did pretty good, but I shouldnt have missed the question i did...dont know what I was thinking. They should have asked more questions because I would like to think americans have at least a little more knowledge, but maybe thats just me being very optimistic.

Fighting Intolerance and Ignorance wherever I see it.

I took the test and I'm in the 60th percentile. Kind of disappointed, actually. I missed three questions. I wish there were more questions though...

Some of the questions were a bit outdated. I got 8 out of 9 correct and ended up in the 91st percentile. I missed the last question.

I did the same thing.. 8 of 9 correct. I was surprised that they're were not more questions..

What surprises me is the fact that Hillbilly Clinton was in the middle of the questions....I figure one about her would be question 2 or 3.

I don't pay attention as much any more because this makes me so mad and depressed. Politicans never say what their true platform is. So many are just looking to put money in their pocket. Plus I hate watching to see if my friends are dying over there. Too much of this sick life style that we Americans have created for ourselves is taking over and its going to be our worst nightmare. The over development of the land. Instead I try and focus on the local level to make myself feel like things are getting better

grump456's picture

I thought I was going to be well below 50% because I listen to the news here in the USA, :-( , but I do watch the Daily Show and Colbert report, so I was pretty up to date than most.

I GOT 77%

MV, Have a GREAT day!

I was taken a back that I know so much about the current events. The only question I missed was the one about minimum wages. Go figure. It's so much higher where I live, but of course that's probally do to the COLA.

My results were as follows: You correctly answered 8 out of the 9 possible questions, which means you did better on the quiz than 91% of the general public.

Wow i must be smarter than i thought!!
i took the test without even looking at anything just from the little info i get on the tv every once in a while and was in the 60%
