Zaadz.com's question of the day on April 25th was- What, if anything, do you believe we owe the earth? Why?

My response:

"There are some people in the world who are wealthy with extensive house grounds and several not always gas efficient cars. Needless to say, there are some celebrity standards that use earth resources at an accelerated pace without much concern for the effect of their use. Recently some celebrities have decided to buy carbon off-sets so that their consciences are not weighed as they rapidly pollute the earth.  In this way, the rich and famous, 'give back to the earth' by paying for the pollution that people in cities don't use. It makes them feel better about their over use when they give pocket change to the government.

Now, if I had a guilt about the way I treat the earth, I could do the same thing, I could buy fifty dollars or so of carbon exhaust allotment and 'give back to the earth'. But, as noble as that idea is, I would rather not be so arrogant. Celebrities who pay to pollute are not making the world a better place, they are not giving anything back, they aren't preserving the environment.

I truly believe we owe earth respect. As humans we know that we are not invincible, we know that there are things we must do to survive, such as breathe, drink water, eat, sleep. Also critical to our survival is the planet we live on, without it and its resources we cannot survive. So just as we take care of our bodies, should we not also take care of our host site? I think we owe the earth the same concern we give our bodies."

What do you think, do we owe the earth something, and if yes, what?
