Fast Food Not as Bad as You Think

            The simple everyday choices we make shape who we are, from driving the speed limit, being on time, and all the other miniscule decisions we make daily. The choices we make with our eating habits are detrimental to our health. Recently the media has been focusing on how bad fast food is for our health. Fast food doesn’t need to be all bad all the time, make healthier choices. Contrary to popular belief some nutritionist actually say that it is okay to eat fast food in moderation (Spurlock).

           Fast food is often criticized for multiple reasons, most commonly because it is so predictable and so unhealthy. While fast food is quite predictable, it can be reassuring to people in a hurry or people far from home. “Everyday, one out of four Americans eats fast food. Most do it for the convenience – lack of time leads many people to the drive thru (Kemp).” Money defiantly plays a large part in it, when eating out fast food is generally the cheapest option. Despite all the critique, fast food can be incorporated in to a healthy diet and ultimately healthy lifestyle.

Fast food caters to the whole family, the children generally have a play area to use up their energy. The parents are satisfied by the low prices and the fact that the kids are happy. Fast food restaurants are often a hangout for teens. The fact that fast food is popular with all ages naturally makes it the most common selection for family outings.  

Fast food will not harm you if you eat it in moderation. When eating fast food, there are ways to make fast food healthier; it doesn’t have to be all bad all the time. For instance monitoring the portions, no “super-sizing.”  “Until recently, french fries were the only vegetable option at many fast food restaurants (Kemp).” When at a fast food restraint pick the salad or fruit options and hold the dressing. It can be beneficial to order food to go because studies show that people tend to consume more food when they are not at home in their own kitchen (Kemp). Also, when being aware of the of the portion size it can help to share entrees, appetizers, or desserts. Avoiding all you can eat buffets is recommended, it is all too easy to over indulge if the food is sitting there. It is also good to avoid soda because it has high sugars and calories – drink water instead. Choosing grilled or broiled sandwiches is a healthier choice. When eating out, it is important to make healthy choices. 

People need to eat, food fuels the body it is necessary. But, often times people will eat for other reasons than hunger. When eating, only eat because of hunger do not eat because of boredom or stress, this is a very bad habit and will effect one’s health. It is important to make good eating choices because it directly affects one’s health and lifestyle.

Everyday all day we make choices, choices about everything from what to where and how to talk. Making healthy choices is the most important choice we make because it affects one’s health and ultimately life. Good health is detrimental to living a full life and it starts with making healthy decisions when it comes to food. Fast food can be an okay addition to a healthy diet, if you eat it in moderation. Making good choices directly affects ones’ life – make good choices.
