AIDS is a problem of pandemic proportions. we MUST do something... while HIV/AIDS affects less than 1 percent of the american population, in some parts of the world its as common as the flu. We are truly fortunate to live in a wealthy society- it is our duty to search for a vaccine and a cure.
Below is a letter i wrote to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX). Write your congress people- if you dont know who they are or their addresses- Google it- thats the beauty of the internet.
To the Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison
It has recently come to my attention that there is a Senate bill in committee dealing with AIDS research and care for children and families. HIV and AIDS have become an epidemic, and according to Senate bill 1051, 50 percent of all new cases are youth between the ages of 15 and 24. Despite this rapid increase of HIV/AIDS in the youth population only three out of 150 past and present vaccine trials have included the pediatric demographics. Worldwide, one child dies every minute from HIV/AIDS related diseases. Texas is fourth in the nation in terms of number of HIV/AIDS cases reported. While medications can lengthen the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS, these medications are often too expensive for those who need them. A vaccine is the only solution.
Although HIV/AIDS affects a relatively small proportion of Americans, it is a global problem that warrants an arduous search for a vaccine and a cure; ergo I would propose that Congress investigate apportioning ample funding to search for a cure and a vaccine that is effective for adults and children for HIV/AIDS.
Thank you very much for your time and your representation of the great state of Texas
