This morning started like many others. Woke up, drank coffee, got the kids off to school, drank coffee, went to the store to buy the stuff for Faith's birthday party tonight (she's five), drank coffee, checked into school, logged into progressive U, hit "Track" to see if anyone had commented on my posts and if I would like to reply...
And then I found this comment left on someone's abortion blog (I am not including the name of the person who wrote this, who this was in response to, or even a link to that particular blog, since none of those things are important; what's important is that people actually think this way):
"Mistake (noun)- an incorrect, unwise, or unfortunate act or decision caused by bad judgment or a lack of information or care
I'm pretty sure that rape is someone's mistake."
Now, in context, the blog was about women should have to "own up" to their mistakes, and this comment was made in respose to someone else who pointed out that getting raped was not a mistake.
This comment had pissed me off so bad, I had written out an entire reply. Ultimately, before hitting submit I decided to delete that reply and post a new blog on this.
A mistake is something that, generally, is unintentional. Rape is definitely done with intent - the intent of gaining power over another human being, the intent to hurt and violate another human being, and so on. How can anyone even think that rape is just a mistake? How heartless is that.
I hope the person that wrote this is reading it, and I hope you come face to face with someone who has been raped, and I hope you tell her that her rapist "made a mistake". See how far that gets you.
