I once heard someone say, that the music we listen to influences society. That it simply shapes the way we act and how we think of things.
Why would someone think that? I mean we only sing along and dance to this music, right?
However, listening to the words and understanding the meaning of the music we listen to, may have an affect on us without us even knowing it. I am mainly focusing on RAP music, most of the time there criticizing the image of a woman by calling them bad names. Or there talking about getting " Hyphey" or haveing a lot of money.
Well, take a look around. Ever since BAY AREA music came out, and people saw that it was the "new cool thing" everyone started saying that they were from the Bay Area, representing it like they knew the history about living over there. Or even with women, many young guys are now using the terms that these " rappers" use in there songs to call upon a lady. Or perhaps, when rappers bring up the subject of shooting there enemies, next thing you know everyone is trying to shoot someone and it ends up all over the news.
Although rap music is simply just telling the artists own way of life, is society being influenced by it?
Well, even though rap may have some unnecessary words and topics within there lyrics they might just be trying to send out a message. A message that talks about racism, disruption, poverty, politics, or simply just about haveing a good time. Perhaps these messages that are being revealed in lyrics, are not setting the example for others but are stateing the act after its happened. For example, if soceity is going to be violent, then rappers are going to state the issues that are making society violent throughout their lyrics.
Could music be controversial?
Does the society have to change in order for these lyrics to be more appropriate for the youth?
