In case you haven't heard, Britney Spears officially filed for divorce from her husband, Kevin Federline, on Monday, November 6th. Coincidentally, later that night she appeared on the David Letterman show to reveal her new, fit, post-pregnancy body. Millions of men across America (and the world) have anxiously been awaiting this day. I would personally like to take this opportunity let Britney know that if she is interested in pursuing another relationship, I am available. (Since we all know Britney frequently reads these blogs)
However, this recent news story requires us to ask an interesting question: Why is Britney Spears still garnering constant news attention? She hasn't released an original album in almost THREE YEARS! There have been no new performances, no new songs, no new movies, no anything. It is extremely rare that a prominent individual could recieve so much attention while, well, doing pretty much nothing.
We, as a nation, are OBSESSED with Britney Spears. You, as an individual, may have no interest in her, but there is a substantial number of people in the world who are quite enamored by this woman. Why? While she is a talented singer, she certainly is outshone by a number of other women in terms of pure vocal talent and range. While she is very attractive, the objective observer would point out that there are a number of women who are more physically attractive. She is a very talented dancer, but it certainly isn't her dancing abilities that she is prized for.
What, then, is her appeal? Since it isn't based on any sort of pure talent, it must be something else. Mariah Carey is loved because she has a 37 octave range. Pamela Anderson is loved because she is gorgeous. Paris Hilton is loved because she is a whore. But Britney Spears, well, she is loved because she is Britney Spears. She is loved because every time we hear her name we instantly envision her dancing to "...Baby One More Time" in a that Catholic Schoolgirl outfit, or in that bright red skin tight spandex suit on Mars singing "Oops I Did it Again," or being pretty much naked in her "Toxic" music video. Anyone who hears her name will inevitably stop whatever activities currently hold their attention, pause, and think "Oh Britney."
Sure, she might not be deemed "talented" or "quality," in the objective sense of those words. Loving Britney Spears is the nutritional equivalent of eating Skittles. Sure, some people might not eat Skittles for supposed health reasons. However, the one universally true fact that I have observed throughout my limited experience is this: Everyone loves Skittles; and, even though they may never admit or recognize it, everyone loves Britney Spears.
