Now I don't know which driving laws are enforced in the entire United States, but I'm from Connecticut so I'm talking about the new laws we have here. Here they are:
- No talking on your cell phone while driving (you can use a headset phone though)
- Age to get a learner's permit: 16
- Age to get license: 4 months after getting permit (with Driver's Ed); 6 months after getting permit (if learning from parents)
- After you get your license there's 6 months before you can drive with your friends; after 3 months you can drive with siblings; before 3 months I think you can only drive with a parent
Lately there's been lots of controversy with the cell phone law and lawmakers are considering banning cell phone use altogether while driving (including headsets). I agree with these cell phone laws because I notice how distracted many drivers are while they're on the phone. So many times when I see cars cutting people off I look at the driver and sure enough they're talking on the phone. And with headsets people still kind of day dream while talking on the phone. Now some of the people who are against this law say that banning headset phones would be stupid because people can daydream just as much while having a conversation with a passenger. I don't really agree only because I witness the erratic drivers daily...most of whom are talking on the phone...whether it's a headset or not.
What are your opinions? And I was wondering about other states' restrictions on new drivers. Some states don't allow driving at certain night hours. I think that's a good law. Right now nobody actually follows the law of waiting 6 months after getting your license before you can drive with your friends. Also, though, the police aren't enforcing it. When I went to the required 8 hr. drug & alcohol course that you need before getting a license the cop actually said that the police would not pull over teens driving with too many people, or peopel talking on cell phones unless there was another traffic violation. Then why does the law even exist? I think the police need to enforce it...because so far, nobody has stopeed talking on their cell phones because they know that they won't get in trouble for it.
