This year I will be presenting my senior project on the topic of domestic violence. I chose this topic because it has affected my life. My dad was a wife beater, so I just want to inform girls of how dangerous it is and ways to protect themselves. I was just researching it, so here are some statistics and facts that I just found to be very significant:
- Women ages 16-24 are most vulnerable
- between 1976 and 1996 domestic violence killed 4 women per day
- only 50% of the cases are reported to the police
- 50% of men who assault their wives also assault their children
- between 3.3 and 10 million children witness domwstic violence annually
- 2001 Harvard Study: 1 in 5 female high school students experienced physical and/or sexual violence from their partners
- worldwide: 1 in 3 women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime
- 30% of Americans know a woman who was physically abused by her husband
- 324,000 women physically abused by their husband during their pregnancy
- over 3 women murdered by a husband or boyfriend every day
- 40% of girls ages 14-17 know a peer who has been beaten by a boyfriend
This is obviously a grave issue. People do not even realize how common domestic violence is. And 50% of thevictims do not even report it!
