Gardasil, available for girls ages 9-26 will be available in a three shot series. However, it's unclear how widespread the vaccine will be administered, since it costs $360. The vaccine helps to prevent certain strains of HPV, an STD which causes approximately 70% of all cervical cancer. Yay, progress!
The drug will be marketed as a cervical cancer vaccine rather than an STD vaccine, even though all cervical cancers aren't caused by the virus.
Cervical cancer caused by HPV are responsible for 290,000 deaths a year. Which truly isn't that much (given the world population of approximately 6,000,000,000), but it's enough.
