Letters to the Editor

One old-fashioned, but still very effective way to get the word out is by
sending a letter to the editor of a newspaper or magazine.  You would be
surprised how many people carefully read the letters to the editor, even for a
small publication.   Once you've researched an issue and written about
it on the Progressive U site, why not send a letter to the editor of your
student paper or local newspaper?

Here are a few tips on how to make it more likely that your letter gets
published:

  • Start by referencing an article or issue that the newspaper or magazine
    has reported on recently.
  • Next, go on to explain your position, preferably in just two or three
paragraphs.  Where possible, reference your personal experience with an
issue, or how it impacts your community.
  • Finish with a short call to action -- what do you suggest people do?
  • Include your name, address, and a phone number where the editors can reach
you.  They won't publish your phone number, but they may want to
follow-up with you before publishing your letter.

If you do get published, let us know what paper, and when; we'll
share your success with everyone.
