Allama Iqbal (1877-1938)...An Ode to the Cup Bearer

Saqi Nama

The ways of the world have changed
The tune is new, the instruments have changed

Free your mind from mental slavery
Make the youth teachers of the old

Make the same arrow pierce the heart
Awaken the desires in our souls

Give the young a passion that consumes;
Bestow upon them, my passion and my vison

Pour me the wine which burns the veil
For the season of the rose does not come everyday

That wine which reveals the essence of life
That wine which intoxicates the universe

Zamaney Kay Andaaz Badley Gaey
Naya raag hay, Saaz badlay Gaey

Kirday ko ghulami say azaad kar
Jawanon ko peeron ka ustad kar

Jigar Say Wohi teer phir par kar
Tamanna ko seenon main bedaar kar

Jawanon ko sozi jigar baksh de
Mera ishq meri nazar baksh de

Pila de mujhe woh maeh pardah-e-soz
Kay aati nahin fasl-e-gul roz roz

Woh maeh jis say roshan hai zameer-i-hayaat
Woh maeh jis say hai mastee-e-kaayenaat

Saqi Nama-Complete Version

Allama Iqbal - Poet of the East and Pakistan's National Poet

I love him and his works- be warned that his poetry is often times wrought with Islamic religion and ideals but his words often hold truths that transcend religion and background. I love my dad for instilling in me the passion to be inspired, moved and changed by Iqbal...Iqbal is that wine for me that reveals the secrets of the universe and I am the one who decides if I want to accept them and keep them as truths or reject their veracity.

was wondering if people could share some of the best speech/words/poetry that is from their heritage/culture/back ground or just has moved them immensely that it painted how you thought and saw the world?

here is more from my other favorite:

The World Loved by Moonlight-
You must try,
the voice said, to become colder.
I understood at once.
It is like the bodies of gods: cast in bronze, braced in stone. Only something hearltess
could bear the full weight.
