High School Dress Code

Schools want to control, students want to rebel, and there is a continuous battle on how a student should dress.

I feel that there should be a more lenient dress code in schools, because if you don't restrict, students won't feel the need to test their limits. People use what they were to express who they are. However the school administration feels that they need to constrict what students wear, to "protect" them from sexuality and gang violence. Quite honestly you can't overcome those two problems, through banning what someone wears. The administration feels that the school environment has to be void of all distractions which includes clothes. School if for the student to learn. However students need some sort of freedom of expression, or they'll feel like prisoners. There has to be an even ground somewhere, any thoughts?

That is true about the gang violence. Gang violence has not decreased within schools and outside of schools. Gang violence has actaully increased through the years.
Dress code apperantly has no effect on gang violence.

my other concern about the dress code is their view on what is a distraction and apropriate. it is completely relative.

i could claim that the handicapped student in my classroom is a distraction becuase he is slow.

RIGHT. there needs to be a clear definition of what a 'distraction' is. Quite honestly i don't think there is one.

The stupidest one is the holes in the jeans. I mean its a fashion sense now, its not like its on the butt or anything, its on the knees!! Equivalent to wearing shorts, or capris.

Yes!!! i can not stand the fact that schools do not allow children to come to school wih holes in their jeans.

yet they allow for students to wear skirts above the knees?
