What is your (intended) major/career?
I am going for an interdisciplinary degree in humanities and social sciences. I am debating between a career in post-secondary education, or becoming a starving writer. Both are equally appealing.
What issues are you most interested in (women's rights, education, racism, advancement of science, the environment, etc)?
Definitely education and promotion of intellectual thought in society.
What advice do you have for other bloggers?
Step outside your comfort zone on a regular basis; it'll help you to grow.
Are you in school, and if so, what year are you?
I am in my sophomore year of college.
If you had to describe yourself (or your blog) in one word what would it be?
Open.
What do you like best about ProgressiveU and your experience here?
Meeting people who have differing views, but aren't afraid of dialogue. We may conflict when we come together, but mutual understanding can arise from this. If we shun everyone and everything we don't understand or agree with, we limit ourselves. Human beings were not designed to be limited.
What's your favorite news source?
Foreign Affairs
If you had a million dollars to spend on anything but yourself, how would you spend it?
Devise a scholarship program for students who have ground-breaking, creative (but viable) ideas on improving our society through education, environmentalism, race relations, energy dependence, or any other national issue they feel warrants focus. We have great potential in our youth; we should encourage them.
What book/movie has most influenced your thinking on an important issue?
The movie Contact with Jodie Foster is my number one favorite movie. It is so brilliantly done and raises the question on how to reconcile religion and science. I felt so empowered and so fragile after seeing that film. Plus, Jodie rocks.
Who has helped shape your opinion on politics/social justice issues?
Ben Franklin, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Bertrand Russell.
How are you active in politics/seeking social justice in your community?
I exercise my right to vote and try to stay informed on my local issues - particularly education. But I am not all about making a statement. I am a youth mentor and also a member of a Hispanic women's organization that addresses concerns/problems in our community. I believe in trying to encourage people to reach their potential one person at a time.
