There was a point in time where I didn’t want to be a girl, do girly things, dress up, wear makeup, wear dresses… I wanted boy stuff like Hot Wheels and boy clothes and a boy name. The Rainbow Families annual conference was this weekend. It is a convocation of resources for GLBT families all over the Upper Midwest. There are workshops about legal protection of partners and children, artificial insemination, transgender parenting issues, saving for college, and adoption, just to name a few. I've gone to the prospective parent workshops before, so this year, I decided to do the educator track. What I learned about the school conditions of GLBT youth was upsetting. A Word On Gender Discrimination

Everybody is aware of the existence, or supposed existence, of discrimination according to race, sexual orientation, or physical sex. Each of these categories can be split up into segments large enough to be very visible: even homosexual and bisexual individuals represent a large enough, and loud enough, segment of the population that people know they exist and are largely unhappy with their social and political standing.

There are, however, other forms of discrimination so deeply ingrained that most people will not even think about them for most or all of their lives.  Read More »

Pakistan 'same-sex' couple jailed

A Pakistani court has jailed a married couple for three years for perjury after a dispute over the husband's sex.

Last week the court ruled that the husband was, in fact, a woman, despite sex-change surgery and that the couple had lied about his sexual status. It also said their marriage was un-Islamic because it was same-sex.  Read More »
