Joy to the World, the Teachers Dead

Tagged:  •    •

I've noticed alot lately the complete lack of respect kids of every age have for teachers. Now, I'm only 17, but surly even I can see how much teachers mean to us as a society. People in 3rd world countries (and even some developed ones) would do ANYTHING for the same education that we've thrown aside like leftover scrapes.

Unknowledgable Instructors

*Warning: This is a rant. If you aren't in the mood to read a rant, find some other blog to read.

So, I'm in my last semester of college, with a 4.0 major GPA (in biology), and a 3.98 overall GPA. Basically, I have to royally screw up my grades this semester in order to not graduate summa cum laude.

Which is why having a professor that grades so arbitrarily frustrates me so much.

Wiki What?

So there has been a fairly recent phenomenon on the Internet that I have used over and over again for school. Wikipedia always seems to have the answers that I need. Sometimes I go straight to Wikipedia to search for what I want, other times I go to Google to search and Wikipedia is in the top two or three results. It is almost like magic.

Islam and progress - an outsider's view

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •

College has forced me to open my eyes to views other people may have, and I am doing my best to integrate open-mindedness into my view of the world.

One world view, however, that I fear I will never completely accept, is Islam. (Muslims, may you forgive me, but I will explain.)

One bad teacher can ruin everything

Don't tell me it's not true. Don't tell me that you've NEVER had a single teacher that intimidated you and made you feel itty bitty. Don't tell me you've never had a bad teacher, resulting in bad grades for you. It happens to the best of us.

I'm not sure if there have been studies on this, or if there are statisctics to prove this or back me up on this. I'm just going from my experience.

The Education Dilemma Part II: Teachers and the Classroom (What's going on in there anyway?)

This is really a two-fold dilemma for teachers.  On the one hand, they are rarely held accountable for what they teach and for what actually happens in the classroom.  Generally the feeling of teachers is very territorial.  “This is my classroom, my space, stay out.”  The defensive nature of an educator is universal.  This could be for several reasons, including feelings of being unapprec

The Education Dilemma Part I: Family Idiocracy

Like many things, education is one of those issues that everyone likes to have an opinion about whether they know what they’re talking about or not.  My goal is to discuss the problem in education, because there is a problem, from the bottom up.  This first discussion will be on, as the title suggests, Family Idiocracy.

Underpaid, Underappreciated, Yet Striving for a Better Future

Tagged:  •    •    •

“Children are our future,” we’ve heard again and again. However, how are we treating those who work closely with, and in some cases, practically raise “our future?” Childcare workers are amongst the least paid in America, and have one of the most important jobs. Teachers, sadly, are not far behind.
