Subordinate Females?

I have always found it interesting that down history, females seemed almost always to be a lower rank of human compared to a man. Think of the word, "woman". It alludes to the creation story of Eve from Adam. Supposedly God created Eve from Adam's rib and that is how the two different sexes were initially made.
