rejection

I just finished reading East of Eden and it struck me just how important a role sibling rivalry plays in our lives. For those of you who don’t know, East of Eden is the story of two generations of brothers. One of the most striking parallels is to the story of Cain and Abel in the Bible.

It had been a day like any other day and I was waiting for my final decision letter from the University of Connecticut. I had decided to apply, since it was close to my brother's house and the possibility of living up near him was an idea that my parents were comfortable with. I visited the campus and fell in love with it.

Good guys finish last. This is a phrase that probably everyone has heard at least once, and yet only the good guys are the ones who can truely understand it from every angle. I'm one of them. I'm the type of person who would almost littlerally do anything for someone I loved, given the chance.

Not growing up with much, I learned to be grateful for everything I had. If I got something nice, I knew that someone worked hard for it. The food on my table was something to be thankful for, whether it was steak or macaroni and cheese.

This essay was written after a prompt given to me in my American Lit. class.

As you breathe in my soul and my scent, the mixture of my stress and sweat,

I think back to when we first met...the flesh and the rest of that other mess.
