Cultural "misfits"

Tagged:  •    •    •

After attending a late event with a friend, we decided to take a late trip to steak n' shake.

Coming in, there was a group of people, that were rather annoying as they were standing directly in front of the door as we tried to walk in. But, paying them no attention, I slipped by them.

33% British - A Celebration of Lack of Heritage

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

St. Patrick's Day, for me, symbolizes the coming of spring. I don't know if its so much needed socialization after the cold winter months or just all those green decorations, but it seems to be a pleasant reminder that the world is getting ready to start anew. But every year its also another booze-filled reminder of my blaring lack of heritage.

On national lineage

Tagged:  •    •

It perturbs me to no end that people feel justified in reciting their national lineages by percentage. For example, people often say things like, “I’m 25% Norwegian, 25% Irish and 50% German.” This induction stems from the speaker’s belief that, for example, one of his or her grandparents is Norwegian, one is Irish, and two are German. This is hogwash.

Losing Grip of My Traditions Through Americanization

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •    •

About 10 years ago, I came to America from Thailand with my family. I didn't know English, so at the time, my heritage was the only thing I held close to my heart. Now, years later, I can no longer speak my language fluently nor remember everything about my culture the way I used to. I'm addicted to freedom and American life style. And the adults are starting to complain.
