Recently I have been researching the negative effect that media, such as magazines, has on body image. I have been finding many frightening and surprising facts. Such as: 81% of ten-year-olds have dieted. This scares me to the core. Millions of girls have eating disorders as well as boys. What causes this devastating problem?
Magazines

Do you read the gossip?
I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I'm addicted to celebrity gossip. Ok, I'm really embarrassed. I don't know what it is and why I am so drawn to it. I must waste up to an hour of my day every day online reading the gossip sites like Perez Hilton, E!

Such a Negative Image
Like almost everyone else in the world, when I am waiting in agonizing long lines at Food City, Wal-Mart and any other stores with magazine racks beside of the check out isles. I skim the front pages of the magazines.
It makes me sick, but every time I see more and more magazines with pictures of "fat" and "thin" celebrities being compared on them.

Free Dirt: Will Deliver
I subscribe to Star Magazine-- but only because I got it for free from a rebate from Office Depot. I also subscribe to U.S. News & World Report. Also free. And I must say, these publications are exactly what they offer: Free Dirt.

Women's Mags Dealing with Societal Issues
I subscribe to almost every woman's magazine that is out there for my age group:Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Glamour, Elle, Vogue, Women's Health, Fitness, Self, Prevention, and a handful of others that are eluding my memory right now...and I have been increasingly impressed with their content.
