I have decided I will not pay to see the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight” I am actually protesting it for a wide variety of reasons. As much as I love Christian Bale and Heath Ledger as actors I will not contribute to Heath’s death like many people are planning on doing.
Back in December, my English teacher assigned the class a practice free-response essay. However, it wasn’t a timed-essay and she assigned it to us as a take-home essay for us to work on during the weekends. I remember I was having a hard time trying to understand the passage. Maybe it’s because I was too focused on the terms I didn’t know (i.e., scrivener, liver-complaint, and wiseacres) or too frazzled at the time. Now, I feel pretty stupid because I realized I was reading WAY too into it. After reading it for a few minutes today (and not remembering the definitions of certain terms as listed above), I could extract the main ideas of his essay. It was basically a list of all the things the want of money can do to a person. :P It seemed as though Hazlitt had such a negative view on the want of money due to his word choice, of course. I wanted to post his essay (along with my response essay) because his usage of language to illustrate his points had made quite an impression on me. In this modern-day, it seems as though the ‘flowery’, descriptive language is being downsized, and we’re more concentrated on keeping our writing compositions concise and straight to the point.

So, I've come to the conclusion that politicians are greedy and selfish. Okay, I've always known that but now more than ever. Since tomorrow is Indiana's primary the candidates have been focusing a lot of attention here and making it seem like they really care about the constituencies, but they don't. They just want the votes. How do I know?
So my housemates and I went to one of the cheap theatres to see "There Will Be Blood" last night...and I have to say, it was probably one of the best movies I've seen in my life...on my top ten list now for sure.
So, our country has the means to take on any other country in this world. Russia, Iran, Iraq, China, North Korea, you name them. I don't know, it seems like our economy and foreign relations seem to overcome our own streets. We all know about gangs and gang violence, and it affects all of our lives, directly or indirectly, in some way or another.
I keep getting invited to these groups on Facebook about how to slash gas prices. It's nice that everyone has these idealistic concepts and principles but honestly, they just won't work. See gas corporations such as Exxon and Shell don't care about consumer culture the way a lot of other, noticeably smaller businesses do.
What is it about material things that make us so greedy? Why do I spend my extra money on clothes and handbags when people are starving around the world? Does this make me selfish, or am I just enjoying the opportunities and luxuries I've created for myself? (Your input is quite welcome and appreciated)
They seem to spring up everywhere like dandelions in an unkempt garden. Seemingly endless isles of designer clothing, toys, Rubbermaid containers that come in three different color schemes, fifteen models of universal remotes, wall mounted basketball polishers, and of course…the ever popular, fully automated, electronic garbage bin with fake chrome finishing.
