false hopes

I am tired of people (particularly those older than myself) informing me that it is MY generation that will have to deal with X, Y, or Z. I want to be perfectly clear: I realize this. I am completely and fully aware that the nation is in a downward spiral and that all the problems that have been created by the baby boomers are left to my self-indulged generation.

I dial her number, the number that will continue to plague my memory for eternity. It rings three times:
“Hello?” Laura said.
“How could you do this, Laura?” I said.
“How could I do what?” She quickly rebutted.
“Don’t give me that.”
“I never said we were going out.” She replied.
“Are you serious?”
“We were together, but never going out.” She retorted.
