Drug overdosing is the second leading cause of accidental deaths. If you haven’t already guessed, automobile accidents are the first. Unfortunately, not enough high school and college aged kids view this subject with the amount of severity it deserves. Between 1999 and 2004 the number of deaths caused by accidental overdose rose 62.5%.
The person that has had the greatest impact on my life is my step brother, Arnoldo. He is from my dad's first marriage and he was living with us because his mom did not want him with her for some reason. I rememeber when I was ten that he would get home at almost sunrise. My dad would be really angry at him because he would get home drunk and on drugs.
I just came home from the mall and kind of experienced a realization. While walking through the mall I over heard a conversation with two teenagers.
This is what they roughly said:
"Yo man, this got me feelin' nice." Says Kid One.
"What?" Says Kid Two.
"The morphine got me feelin' nice." Says Kid One.
"See, I told you...." Says Kid Two
It's a gray February day here in Minneapolis. We're in the worst part of winter, when the sun seldom shines and it could be below zero, dumping snow, or raining at any given time. The existing snow is gray with dirt and car exhaust. It's the time of year when no one wants to leave the house.
