East Lansing - To suggest that college students armed with bananas could create anything wholesome and family-friendly may raise a few eyebrows.

But to suggest that college students and bananas are the backbone of a dynamic, progressive organization that has raised more than $150,000 to date and inspired countless people to improve basic health care in Africa? That may raise more eyebrows.  Read More »

Do the means have to justify the end?

He’s an engineer, and he learned in school that, not only is there a right solution to a problem, there is a right reason for that answer and a wrong reason.  Read More »

definition of development (revisited): beauty in the palm of your hand

Last summer I wrote about the definition of development after having a conversation with an incredible Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana who was really making the most of his time and abilities. This year, I gave up my summer, and I love it.  Sounds crazy, right? Not so much.

You see, I work for an organization called Environment NJ this summer, and it is amazing.  I've only been there for a week now, but I can honestly say that the experience has changed my life.

I am a canvasser, so, basically, my job is to go door to door around different cities and towns in NJ and try to get people involved in current issues concerning their environment, and to promote knowledge and positive progress.

I must admit, it isn't the most glamorous of jobs; I've been chased by dogs, soaked  by sprinklers, screamed at by people who don't want to be bothered, and lost in the middle of nowhere (or at least that's what it seemed like to me at the time).  Read More »
