Latin America Rant Part One: Cuba

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

So here's the thing. I spend a lot of time studying Latin America. As such, there are certain issues I, and others like me, get very passionate and angry about. These include:
1) NAFTA
2) The IMF
3) Human Rights Violations
4) Race and gender
5) Immigration policies
6) The War on Drugs
7) The War on Terror
8) the difference between communism and socialism

¡Party in Little Havana! (08/01/06)

Since I live in Miami, the local news stations actually scooped CNN and even reports on the internet. I was watching the event unfold before my very eyes.

Is it the end of an era in Cuba? What will Raul bring?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

I figured it would be best to wait for everyone else to have some time to talk about what is going on in Cuba before putting in what I have to say. Fidel Castro's resignation to many may seem like something that will change everything. I have the opposite to say.

Bye Bye Fidel!

I think this may be too new for me to entirely grasp - especially since I'm still learning about Castro in detail. I'd love to think that his brother, Raul will do a 180 and that the US will lift the embargo and bring a new economic prosperity to the country - but with our Administration being who and what it is - who knows how this will turn out?

Every morning before I leave the house for Anatomy class, I always check the news and the weather. This morning I was surprised to see news about Cuba. I have wondered what Cuba was up to lately because the last time I heard anything about the country was when Castro temporarily relinquished power to his brother Raul due to ill health.

Castro Says Goodbye. Now What?

Tagged:  •    •    •

Every couple of months, Fidel Castro disappears from public. He may be an 81 year old man with health problems, but he's no longer the leader of Cuba.

Cuban Sanctions

I think that my main question regarding the political candidates can be simplified to one question:

Should the sanctions on Cuba be lifted?

Because I am really pissed that it's not.
