Guilt and Torture

Before Kaia was born, there was a standing joke around here that we were going to start a 'fund' for him. Instead of a college fund, his was going to go toward paying for the massive amounts of therapy he would undoubtedly need after enduring my sister, my self and the rest of the family for 18 years. We are, to put it mildly, kind of like Dharma... without a strong Greg force.

There are many theories as to what causes deviance to exist. Theorists come from a multitude of backgrounds, anywhere from biological to psychological to sociological. What many do not address, however, is any possible origin of deviance.

Atonement: Crimes and Reparations

Tagged:  •    •    •

After recently watching the movie Atonement, I began to wonder what the meaning of the word really was. The definition of the word is this: satisfaction or reparations for a wrong or injury; amends. When I look at this, then look at the movie, then look into life, I begin to wonder how this all fits in to real life.

In mid-2006 a Mormon fundamentalist leader named Warren Jeffs was placed on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Top Ten Most Wanted List as well as the Fox television show America's Most Wanted. Jeffs made it onto the infamous list for child molestation as well as other charges and the facts unveiled about him and the community he was running would make the coldest heart skip a beat.

Executing Judgment and Judging Executions

The Supreme Court is currently in the process of making a decision regarding the potential cruelty of lethal injection, the most popular form of capital punishment in the United States. An opponent of the death penalty in all cases in the United States, I'll save the cruelty argument for another time. Instead, I wish to utilize this space to discuss the process leading up to the death penalty.

Drugs Are Illegal for a Reason

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

I just spent an hour and fifteen minutes engaged in a class discussion about whether or not the government should be allowed to make drugs illegal on the basis of regulating our health. Questions were posed such as "should the government then make food that makes us fat illegal?" But what if that's not the issue?
